Watched Drinking Buddies and thought it was just meh. The only movies of that ilk I have liked are Frances Ha and Your Sister's Sister. The rest just seem like lazy ripoffs of a vaguely Woody Allenish style.

Directed and acted as a play (it was a play originally). Fucked up but also quite funny.

after watching the first hobbit movie earlier this week, i spent the rest of my evenings this week watching the LoTRs trilogy (extended version so i split the final movie into 2 viewings). really really enjoyed them. more so than when i saw them the first time, this is my first re-watch.

hope to see the new hobbit movie over the weekend somehow.

    A few recents:

    ladolcevita
    bernie
    headhunters

    (all excellent)

And just watched the lives of others again. This move is one of my all time favorites.

This outdates me by a few years, but since I've seen it I can't imagine the holidays without it:

Y N Y - have the The Great Beauty on my watchlist. Don't know that I prefer LDV to those, but have fond memories of watching it for the first time ~3 years ago with the in-laws. Started it around 11:30 pm and while most of them left/fell asleep her mother stayed up to watch the whole thing. Still don't know if she actually enjoyed it or was just being polite.

    A few other semi-recent:

2 where the actual story is more interesting than the depiction:
reversal of fortune - irons was excellent
compliance - not worth your time

    3 uncomfortable flicks:
terri - surprised i didn't enjoy this, but the majority of scenes were gratuitous and went nowhere
shame - well done. made mental note to never again watch pornography
we need to talk about kevin - gripping. tilda swinson was excellent

    [IMG] [IMG]

Fun ones to watch after the above:
bourne supremacy - pleasantly surprised - not a huge fan of the bourne movies, but thought this was a standout
wreck it ralph - good, not to the level of pixar standouts
robot & frank - feel good cat burglar / robot movie of the year for sure
heartbreaker - watched again - one of the few romantic comedies i would reccommend

    [IMG] [IMG]

And a few I finally found time to watch:
    argo - i saw argo
stoker - i will watch any movie with nicole kidman. found this a little predictable and the closing music ridiculous, but engaging. last tony scott movie
a lonely place to die - uneven, but an entertaining suspense movie about a kidnapping in the highlands
killing them softly - a little disappointing, but enjoyable
headhunters - again excellent. one of the more entertaining movies i've seen in a long time. definitely worth a watch
the housemaid - scenes will stay with you.

    have a few qued up:
    only god forgives
four lions (thanks to this thread)
    shallow grave
    dead ringers

    Love that film.

Looking forward to watching Barbara, which is now on Netflix. I'd like to see how it represents East Germany compared to The Lives of Others which, based on my admittedly limited knowledge, does it brilliantly.
