Just watched Your Friends And Neighbors again after some years. Still a great La Bute. Cracking dialogue. Jason Patric drop kicking the baby -funny; Nastasha Kinski -adorable. And great sauna scene.
Do you like Klaus flicks?
Just watched GATTACA, which i liked much better than In Time. It was a bit of a contrast from the last movie I watched, The Searchers, my first western ever.
Gattaca was alright. I actually really love that movie, though it has its problems. Aside from the production values and the score (I really love the score, though feel that Michael Nyman is way over-celebrated/credited). One of the problems that I had was that it fell into the cliché of portraying future-mannerisms in professional/formal settings as completely cold and sterile. This always happens in these movies. I understand that we almost always view the future as dehumanizing due to technological progression, but they didn’t have to play it to such a standard routine.
I understand that, due to the subject matter regarding the decline of the reproductive dice-roll and the consequential lack of individuality involved, it might have been appropriate, but still... Too obvious. I think they realized that it might make the film suffer so they threw in the old "Future human, clawing at the walls to express himself against the will of his repressive societal conditioning" schtick.
The personal interactions were more believable than the professional or formal ones, though Uma didn't seem to snap out of future-ice mode like the others did appropriately. I also appreciated how they didn't focus on showcasing over-indulgent visual representations of future technology and possible interfaces, instead they took a very conservative approach as if, within the film's view of the future, the current aesthetic trend was a conservative revival of the past. It was a smarter approach which aged well.
Good movie, better movie than it is given credit for.
