Just saw this. Very good movie. I liked all the performances of the leads but it was filled with tropes. The duel was pretty awesome. Also, did they really dye their hair blonde back in those days?

Candyman (2021) - I was really excited for it. I love slasher films. Not very good. It had some good moments, but like other Jordan Peele written/co-written movies, it’s a lot of style over substance. There isn’t much character development. The relationships are weakly developed. It feels like scene stuck together without a cohesive thread. Again, some of the slasher moments were fun. It was just a lot of flash and no plot.

“Get Out” was interesting and different. I enjoyed it, but it was overhyped.

“Us” was just awful nonsense. Saw it opening night. The movie was interesting until the ridiculous ending that is full of plot holes.

Candyman was “all white people are evil or racist.” It isn’t nuanced. No character substance or depth. Just a monolith of racism. It is just “gentrification bad”, “cops are racist murderers” and “whites are all racist”.

Started phantom menace.

This one holds up better than I remember. (I'm also only halfway through).

Jar Jar is irredeemable. The funny bits are not funny. Anakins early scenes are just bad kids writing and acting. There was very little reason given to care about the Trade Federation. Having those little straws so that the jedi could immediately see under water was stupid.

But there's at least a star wars vibe. It's at least fun at times. I think like you look at just how weird and selfaware the OT was with its weirdness. Like the Mos Eisley Cantina band was such a weird but hilarious addition to the SW universe. There was so much that just casually added tremendous depth to everything but that all seems a bit forced in the prequels. It's also funny how in this the cast is like 20 people and you think about A New Hope which had a cast of like 8 people one of which was a sasquatch and another was a robot that only beeped.

My son got me to watch The House on Netflix, which is a somewhat creepy but also dark humor stop motion anthology. Also watched Phantom Thread again on Netflix. Such a great film.
