Pretty good heist movie, one of Kubrick's early pictures (I think his second or third?) Worth watching, though definitely some subpar performances and an unnecessary amount of narration for my liking. The ending's very memorable. Favorite early Kubrick would still have to be Paths of Glory, which came out in '57 right after this and remains one of my favorite Kubrick's, if not one of my favorite war movies outright.

Is that the one about a heist at a racetrack? If so, I caught that a few years ago.

Can't really recall anything memorable about. I did watch the entire thing.

Gene Hackman is the leader of a small group of master thieves plotting their last caper so that they can retire. Danny DeVito plays his financial backer/fence and would like the team to take down one more score before they go their separate ways.

Danny withholds the payment for their most recent job in an effort to convince him. Gene and his team are having none of it. Fuck you..pay me!

They come to an agreement.

The score? Snatch a shipment of gold off of an aircraft. The plan is sweet. The backstabbing is expected. The one liners are classic..."Everyone needs money, that's why they call it money!"

David Mamet wrote and directed, and his wife, Rebecca Pidgeon, co-stars.

Well worth a watch. The ending could have been tied together a little better, but a cool flick.

3.8/5.

Such a great film and one of the best lines; “he’s so cool sheep count him to get to sleep.”

Those who get Criterion MUST watch The Passion of Joan of Arc.

I’m not sure what you mean but I stream it through my Roku tv. I recommend checking if your local library provides access to Kanopy too. It’s usually a limited number of borrows per month but they have a good selection, particularly foreign films.

I saw that at a special screening when I was in high school with the local symphony providing the music. Thirty years on, I still remember walking out of the theatre blown away. Extremely powerful.

A very dark black comedy. Worth watching and thought provoking. We'd never even heard about it. Streaming on amazon prime.

First viewing - I found it to be super compelling, with an especially tight last hour. I'm interested in reading more about some of the conversation around the movie's historical accuracy, but as constructed it's incredibly tense and well done. One of the best Chastain performances I've seen, as someone who often considers her to be miscast or overrated.

I watched this a few months ago and enjoyed it. Unfortunately I remember just a handful of it. Too bad.

Fires on all cylinders. Incredible creative vision from Joel Coen, with exceptional set and sound design, distinct use of lighting, and a stacked cast. Of course Denzel and MacDormand crush it, but the MVP of the movie for me is Kathryn Hunter for her performance as all three witches:

Don’t sleep on this one.

Transpecos. For a 90 minute western thriller (aka basically my favorite) it was good. The white dude just seemed whiny amd probably not as nad off as he claimed. But it was beautifully shot amd somehow claustrophobic despite being in the wide open desert. Also interesting how the bad guy never is seen but is always present and watching. Makes him that much more sinister.

I really love westerns.
