I am not a parent. I will not be a parent anytime soon. This is by choice and conscience. I had a good upbringing.

    What makes a good parent?

Just to clarify, my saying "I had a good upbringing", in context, is not a reflection of some idea that would suppose that a less-than-good upbringing presupposes any less ideal of conscience.

Ah, man, I'm not going to have to define "good upbringing" or "less-than-good upbringing" am I?

You're a guy. What do you want from the mother of your child? What is the minimum you demand of yourself to provide? What do you expect?

You're a girl. What do you want from the father of your child? What is the minimum you demand of yourself to provide? What do you expect?

Note: I haven't found the proper wording as yet...

    Wording. OK, How about this:

Why bring kids into this world as we (you) know this world?

    Do tell...

    This is an interesting topic.

I have noticed that households with 2 parents have children that attend college and at the very least become solid professionals, while children raised in single family homes have more of a tendancy to skip college and struggle.

That is at least what I've seen amoung my friends. There are of course MANY exceptions to this rule, but this is what I have seen personally.

So I believe the 2 parent thing holds some importance. I'm not convinced that a single parent has enough power to control their children, especially come teen years, at least in America where laws protect children.

I know for a fact there was not alot my mother could do to discipline myself of my little brother. If we wanted to do something, we would, there was little she could do about it. She was too busy trying to pay the bills to have time to devote to us, not her fault at all, she just needed help.

Every family has issues, every child is gonna carry some issues with them from their family, but the only constant I've noticed is that single parent children have done poorly compared to 2 parent households.

A good parent is someone who is at peace with life.

one could say, that applies to people in general.

Yes, but it's important to resist the primal urge to procreate if you've got 'issues'. Latex -- the only synthetic the stylish man should ever have on his skin.

Absolutely correct. As someone with issues, I have grappled with the thought of having children for a really long time, but decided against it (at least, until such time as I am "at peace with life").

    My 2-cents...

A good parent keeps their children safe while still letting them explore the world...

A good parent doesn't try to force their children to live their own unrealized dreams, but rather let's their children find and pursue their own dreams...

A good parent helps their children to learn and to experience life...

A good parent is there for their children and serves as a positive role model in their lives...

A good parent loves their children unconditionally.
