You were so very thoughtful to share the exciting build-up to your wedding with all of us. How sly of you to get us all into the hustle and bustle by pretending you were going to go half-way with the formality. You've been too conscientious in your outfits for me to believe you would let standards drop on this grandest of occasions.

I'll have to say that Brooks Brothers stiff bib shirts have always been among my proudest clothes to own, with all the collars they have to choose from. If you have a long neck, then by all means go with the High Hamilton collar or the equivalent, not a Low version. It's a really stunning collar, flattering to a face that has character.

I would also recommend that you call directly to the flagship store and ask for the Floor Manager in the formal department. He will be happy to help you look both dignified and festive in a way that, as someone has already mentioned, will always look grand in photographs as the years go by. So ask him for all the pointers he can offer.

Carl from CEGO, who is my usual in-person shirtmaker, has already graciously offered to help guide me in this process as far as shirt and vest are concerned. My fiance seems to like the pleated bib front with bow tie and vest - I'm not sure if this even works or looks too cluttered.

Soon we will have to discuss what my groomsmen are going to wear. I'm thinking I'm going to put them in something slightly less festiv than what I'm wearing - perhaps notch lapel tuxes, with the plain front shirts, bow ties and black vests.

I'm also fiddling with the idea of having them wear double breasted tuxes.

Late October wedding in NJ, so the weather should be cool enough. I'm thinking of dressing the fellas up in a double breasted tux with a high cut vest and bow tie.

If you're worried about gilding the lily, stick to white for both the boutonniere and the pocket square.

If you're worried about looking like a waiter, keep your jacket on.

(I never did understand the fear of being mistaken for a waiter while wearing a tuxedo. I've yet to visit a restaurant where the staff wore tailored worsted dinner suits with French cuffed shirts, traditional evening waistcoats and self-tied bow ties.)

I prefer a plain front turndown collared shirt with studs, and a vest like the Brooks (cummerbunds are not for me), with my peak lapeled SB tux. Pleats and pique are too fussy, and cummerbunds have far too soft a line; the severity of a vest is much more appealing to me.

Well, I got so busy that I could never make it over to NYC for Carl to make a shirt and vest for me, so I had to go to plan b. It's actaully a lot different from what I envisioned, but I had to do two things: (1) go with what's available, and (2) step up the formality. In any case, here is the final tally of what I'm wearing:

Isaia single breasted peak lapel tux
Borrelli wing collar shirt with bib front
Brooks black self tie bow tie
Brooks cumberbund
Brooks formal socks
studs and braces from JAB (yeah yeah)
