Ohh ... that BBC world service Jazz show... I love that whole vibe. For West coast sounds Gabor Szabo's playing always put me on the coast somewhere. With his playing with Chico Hamilton in the 60s? So good. Impulse records "El Chico" gorgeous cover art and Chico is dressed on the cover of the two LP set. On the back of the LP he's showing the pink lining of his cape and the album cover is the same color... the music? Fusion of Latin and jazz but that Szabo guitar tone just parks it some where West Coast. Whole LP is good and if you can find the vinyl it is gorgeous.

Listened to Norman Conners "Love from the Sun" LP today. A good Sunday listen. I'd kind of forgotten about the LP. I'd posted Dee Dee bridgwater earlier. She's on this LP as well and Garry Bartz. Another Drummer lead ensemble. A decade past the Chico Hamilton posted above.

Killer line up on "Love from the Sun". Norman Connors, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, Hubert Laws, Carlos Garnett, Hubert Laws, and Herbie Hancock. 1973 recording... just before Conners really went into fusion and more pop. I've got nothing against that, but I think at the time the Jazz world really looked down on his output past this LP.

Mind blowing in the best way. I can't imagine how hard this would have hit in '65. It still has the force of genius today - and the Naima composition is one I adore. There's shots of Elvin Jones in this live performance with steam coming off him. Very cool to see this music made with the bodies and work behind it. Especially with music like this... it can seem to be so ungrounded and disembodied, in a way, as it seem to reaches for other place. Seeing the performance behind it keeps it grounded and more human for me.
