A buddy of mine and I went to a Dee show at the Green Mill a while back and her trio was warming up the crowd for the beginning of the second set. I had a long day and started to nod off...I felt a nudge and turned around...it was Dee grinning at me and laughing. Great photos, BTW, Monty.

US FIVE Joe Lovanao 's band (w/Esperanza Spalding on bass) Sat night @ Chicago's Jazz Showcase. I joined some fellow SFs for a nice time with good music, good drinks, and nice company.

Great time, Monty! I really like the photos (much better than my crummy iPhone shots. LOL).

The Mrs. and I enjoyed meeting you. She told me that I can't wear a porkpie like Joe's.

I think she's wrong about that. A trilby or pork pie would look great with your new manly jackets.

I agree. Unfortunately, Esperanza's hat made me think of this atrocity:

OUT FRONT is a nice CD and worth buying. I had a chance hear his trio playing live a few weeks ago in Indianapolis. They did a few songs from OUT FRONT and I had to have that cd

They were at the Jazz Showcase too, Monty. Instead I went to the Velvet Lounge to see Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra (sorry for the crappy iPhone photos):

An all-star aggregation - Nicole Mitchell on flute, Rob Mazurek on cornet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jeff Parker (from Tortoise) on guitar, John Herndon (from Tortoise) and Mike Reed (who books the Pitchfork Music Festival) both on drums, Josh Abrams on bass and two guys from Sao Paulo (whose names I don't recall) on sampler, some kind of small Brazilian ukelele and percussion.

A terrific show - they performed one extended hybrid composed/improvised piece per set.
