What is this silk scarf I bought 15 years ago?

In another life, it appears that I purchased this silk scarf from Harrods. Encapsulated in an airtight plastic bag, it has been stuffed in a VERY large Patagonia, Black Hole Bag.

It must be about 15 years since I bought it. I cannot ever remember having cause to wear it, or indeed why I purchased it in the first place.

So, what is it to be worn with? Could I wear it with my charcoal, Lanvin suit?

I only ask, as it looks very much like something you'd see at the opera.

It appears to be of great quality. Would be a crying shame if I can only wear it with top hat and tails (like that's ever going to happen).

Hold on a minute... There are 5, unworn Lanvin ties in another airtight bag. When did I buy this stuff? I think I'll keep digging

Just make sure you don't find your ex GF in yet another airtight bag...

Bumped - Because I'd really like to know what this scarf is.

Can it be worn with a regular suit, replacing ones wool scarf?

It's a great scarf, but looks quite formal to my eyes.

And the scary part, is that I still can't remember buying it, or ever wearing it.

I occasionally see people wearing silk scarves with a suit and overcoat and it looks fine, and people wear those one side silk one side wool scarves with suits/coats. They tend to be more robust colours than the one you have (red or blue with white dots or similar) but I don't see why you shouldn't, it's a nice scarf it would be a pity to waste it. You would have to be careful what colours your wore it with it seems to me, more summery than wintry, as it is in quite delicate colours.
I don't think there is any rule saying you can only use a silk scarf for formal wear.

As far as I know an opera scarf is usually black or white. That's just a silk scarf, and I don't see any reason you couldn't wear it with a suit...

I have a few vintage silk scarves. I have no reservation about wearing them with a suit and overcoat, although I wouldn't recommend them for the coldest of days.

No law limiting silk scarves to formal or semi-formal wear. The old gunwriter Jack O'Connor mentioned in his writings that in his youth (pre-WWI) quite a few Arizona cowboys wore silk scarves in preference to the stereotypical cotton bandana.

+1. Especially during spring time or early autumn, when it's chilly but not yet cold in the night, a silk scarf is a nice substitute for a woolen one. I also wear mine with more casual wear, shirt, harrington or golf jacket and denim. Finally, it can be worn as an ascot. A personal quirk of mine, is when I ride my vespa wearing a suit, but without a tie, during the warmer months, I wear one to protect my neck from the evening breeze. After I get off my scooter, I fold it and put it in my breast pocket, wearing it as a pocket square.

Thanks for all of the advice and info. I'll wear it with pride. In my root around through various bags and boxes, I've found (all brand new, unused): 4 x Lanvin ties 1 x Giorgio Armani tie 1 x Gianni Versace tie 1 x pair of reindeer, fur lined, black leather gloves 1 x pair of red silk lined, black leather gloves 1 x shoe horn (genuine horn) 1 x Dunhill belt 1 x pair of MCafee, antique brown shoes. Rediscovered before I decided to reinvent myself, and GIVEN AWAY! 2 x J&M Davidson (made in England) leather glass/sun-glass cases. Very thick leather. One brown, the other black. As I said, all of the above had never been used. It's like Christmas has come early

Wow Lear, sounds like you should have a spring clean, you might have more hidden away. All I find when I go through old bags and stuff is slightly dirty pennies, sweet rappers and sand. Occasionally an out of life condom, want to swap bags?
