Do people actually live in Gilroy (I'm not actually nominating Gilroy, it looks like pretty country)? Do they become de-sensitized to the smell of garlic?

Ah. Yeah, we can't all grow up in paradise, aka, Los Feliz.

I don't know if you are being ironic but I used to hang out in Los Feliz and I thought it was lovely. I love those old LA neighborhoods.

This.

I worked on a project in DHS (2007) and had a good laugh looking at their map of planned and approved projects in the city. Of course I had to take all planned projects into account, and this amounted to about tripling the size of the city within a few years time (mostly all residential).

gilroy and environs (san juan bautista, etc.) are actually quite lovely. except for the constant shaking (they're right on the san andreas fault line ... some places you can see where the ground has slipped 20-30 feet). never notice the garlic smell. in fact, not really all that much garlic grown there anymore ... one of the legacies of monocropping is you sometimes get very specific, very ferocious soil-borne diseases that can wipe out the crop (think irish potato famine). for several years, most of the "gilroy" garlic was actually packaged there and imported from china.

Gilroy definitely used to smell overwhelmingly like garic. The last time I was there it did not but I did not know why. I went to this cheezy little amusement park called Gilroy Gardens. It was about ten million degrees. To this day I have no idea why we went when the Boardwalk is so much closer and so much cooler.

yeah, if you're there in late summer when the plants are up, and it's hot, you can get a whiff.
