What is the ideal chest:hip ratio?

Does anybody have any theories on the ideal chest:hip ratio?

Whose definition of ideal?

Whatever looks best on the person. For instance, a 1:1 chest/hip ratio probably wouldn't look good on anyone.. or a 1:4..

When we stop trying to put the human body in an Adonis-type box, so many people will be so much better off.

I think an 8"-10" drop.

I think you mean drop. In that case, most RTW makers seem to produce suits with a 6-8" drop.

I was under the impression that drop is chest minus waist. I'm curious about how the hips should relate to the hips. Essentially I'm trying to figure out if I have wide hips for a guy.

I have wide hips too. Make sure you wear pants with a normal rise not the low rise ones that are popular today. Also, lift weights to help your shoulders and you will balance out. Finally don't worry about it.

There actually is an ideal... Runway jacket sizes are 40L, with the waist tailored to a 31; so the drop is 9.

Drop doesn't say anything about the hips... just Chest and Waist.

Overall I would say that is a poor model for the average person however.


This might be a better model, if you go to the men's sizes and look at what chest compares to what hip measurement, based on this it looks like hips are sized one inch bigger (which surprises me), an example being a 40 inch chest, 34 inch waist, and 41 inch hip measurement:

It doesn't really make sense towards the ends of the spectrum. You expect a 36 chest to have a 27 waist?

That's not inconcievable.

From what I was told 8-9 drop is an athletic cut and since most people I would assume like to be considered athletic in appearance rather than skinny or obese I would consider 8-9 the ideal. Anything much greater becomes almost cartoonish in appearance.

36 : 24 : 36. Oh, you're asking about a *man's* chest to hip ratio!

Then I agree with Renault78law, approximately 1 : 1 (with a 6" drop from chest to waist) is average. I also believe the "ideal" is the athletic build with approximately an 8" drop, but the same 1 : 1 ratio of chest : hip measurements.

No, it's a ratio.

A 31 waist to a 40 chest is .775.

So for a 36 chest, the waist would be 28".

I wonder if this is the reason that 36/28 are typically the smallest sizes you see in US RTW.

Not so.

I wear a 38s and a 29 pant and I could stand to lose more than a few pounds.
