General fit. as in if it fits well in the Torso, Arms, and Jacket length. Then fabric and color palette.
Also, If i can see the knot in their shoelaces when they are standing still? as in their pants are too short?
-it is a Cringe worthy instant fail.

Even if the the trousers are long enough to cover the socks? That seems a bit harsh, no?

1. If the jacket is too tight.
2. Sleeves or trousers too long
3. What kind of shoes he picked and the condition of the shoes.

Sometimes i notice what MileDT pointed out. I think it looks horrible when the sleeve tag is still on. I think some choose to keep it on if the suit was expensive, like a sign of status.

FWIW sometimes the sleeve tags are quite firmly sewn on, and can be tricky to remove without damaging the fabric, so you might end up with some thinking it's supposed to be left on. I know Marks & Spencer tailored jackets and suits can be like that, tags can be tricky to remove, been there done that. And sometimes in Asia, it can like a brand whore status symbol, to show a Brioni or Armani or something tag.

General fit and sleeve length and width. If those are too long/ wide, I know what I need to know about the make and quality of the garment.

Sleeves too long and pants too long. Not everyone can afford a nice suit, but you can pay for the most basic alterations for under $50. You don't have to spend a lot to look good, but put some effort in. I don't judge cut, style, color, etc. as everyone has different tastes. However, make it look like it's your suit and not something you borrowed from your tall friend.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
