What is the difference, windowpane vs overcheck?

Is one a subset of another? Is windowpane only on suiting?

They are basically the same thing. "Windowpane" tends to be used when talking about a grid pattern on a solid color ground. "Overcheck" tends to be used when talking about a grid pattern that is added to an existing pattern, like a glen plaid or a nailhead.

Not exactly. They are still here. They come to the surface whenever someone says "How'd you like to play a nice game of solitaire?"

Good timing. Field is wide open for qualified "Candidates".

Dr. Yen Lo: His brain has not only been washed, as they say... It has been dry cleaned.

Ah, the dangers of dry cleaning.

Back to this thread, there are both tailors and cloth merchants who use the term "overcheck" in both instances, i.e., on a plain background and/or superimposed over another pattern..rather than "windowpane" for the former. However, that is the most commonly used distinction.
