I have a party to attend in a few weeks and the invitation stated "dock attire." What are my options here? When I think "dock attire" I think white slacks and a navy blazer with bright gold buttons...

My concern is that this is in the midwest and it's Fall now... not too warm.

Don't forget the white captain's hat.

I think it depends alot on who the host is. To me, "dock" attire sounds pretty casual -- basically, preppy sailing clothes. Khakis, topsiders w/o socks; and a colorful shirt. Perhaps a Henry-Lloyd foul weather gear jacket. Dock attire is not yacht club attire, I don't think. On the other hand, if the host is a longshoreman, then dock attire has a whole other meaning.

I should specify that it's a dinner party too.

(Who boats at night?) It's at a restaurant on a lake. The atmosphere is pretty casual, but the hosts are not necessarily. It's among a series of (mostly) black-tie events over a three-day weekend.

Then I'm guessing Smails attire is appropriate.

i would recommend captain haddock, but black suit is frowned upon here.

I'm getting the feeling that this is one of those occasions that you don your white dinner jacket. Depends on the temperature though, seeing as they are mostly used in the summer.

I'd agree with Nantucked Red but for the point that it's in a series of black-tie events.

But then you say it's too warm.

And that it's in the midwest.

What an unusual party!
