Well, not the only thing, of course. But while in the coastal town of Lowestoft in the badlands of East Anglia I ran into this interesting exhibit at the municipal museum:

Pin Point Work
The Art Of Decorating Leather With Rivets

These examples of Pin Point were executed by the late Harry Peck. Mr. Peck was a shoe maker as well as a shoe repairer, and highly skilled in his craft. As well as making and repairing normal shoes and surgical footwear, he also on one occasion made shoes for a 14 year old Alsatian who had worn away his foot pads. In fact, the dog had two pairs of shoes--one for Sunday Best!
He carried out the Pin Point work for advertising purposes, competition work and, one suspects, for the sheer love of his ancient craft.
Mr. Peck sold his South Lowestoft shop in 1979 and sadly died soon afterwards.

An Alsation went to a telegram office, took out a blank form and wrote: "Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof." The clerk examined the paper and politely told the dog: "There are only nine words here. You could send another "Woof" for the same price." "But," the dog replied, "that would make no sense at all."

Very cool nailwork... makes me want to get a shoe anvil and some cobblers nails and have a go at some of my more boring shoes. Maybe I'll just borrow the little air pinner we have around here somewhere...
