What happens to your student credit card when you are no longer a student?

I don't want to close a student account. Is there a way to do an in-house upgrade to the bank's non-student credit card?

Nothing. You can close the student accounts and apply for the "normal" accounts, but there wouldn't be much difference between the two types. Just leave it.

Within the same bank, it'll probably the same account just a product change.

If you don't wanna switch outta your student stuff b/c of a good deal, some banks are quite lenient if you just say you think you might go back to an education program soon. Switching out and back cost the bank money haha + student accounts usually have much more restriction and high interest anyway.

Yes, the student accounts terms are not so good.

They convert it to a different account type and keep "rewarding you" by cranking your limit allowing you to get further and further in debt.

Do I have to tell them to convert it, or do they do it after a certain amount of years?

in my case (which was in Australia btw, so YMMV) they just did it for me after like 3 years.

My bank just did it automatically. Same account number, different type of card. When you applied for the student card they probably asked for your expected graduation date, and that's when they'll send you a new card.

don't cancel any type of card if you can, even store cards. Available, non-utilized credit is a good thing if you ever need a loan or a card with high standards.

With my student card, they switched me to "platinum" before I had even graduated. I don't think they care about when you graduate as long as you pay them properly. Once they figure out you make them money in an easy way (e.g. no need for repo men or debt collectors) they'll jack up your limit and give you a different card.
