What happened to the blue-grey suit?

If you look at photos of the Kennedy, Johnson, or Nixon Administrations, it's surprising to see how many blue-grey suits there were. It's a beautiful color, but it's rare today. Compare this picture of Nixon's cabinet with Obama's. Nixon is wearing a blue grey suit.

Incidentally, Elliot Richardson is second from the front right side, and George H.W. Bush on the back far right. Donald Rumsfeld is wearing an olive DB with bizarre looking lapels. Nixon has no break in his pants.

Obama's cabinet members are all wearing dark navy or black suits:

I love the color as well - and was fortunate to find this Brioni suit with superfine Escorial wool, in a subtle sharkskin. Feels like I'm not wearing anything, and the color is distinct, but tasteful (ok, the tie is hideous, but that's not my tie!).

The Brioni's a similar color as the suit worn by Secretary of State William P. Rogers in the cabinet photo.

Just to show that Republicans aren't the only ones who can wear the blue-grey suit, here's President Kennedy signing the order to blockade Cuba during the Missile Crisis.

Elliot Richardson is wearing a blue-grey suit in this photo, in contrast to President Nixon's plain grey suit. (A little piece of trivia: Richardson holds the record for the most number of Cabinet offices held).

Henry Kissinger in White House Years noticed that Nixon wore his "pant legs as always a trifle short." Funny to think that hipsters on the left today and Nixon have some degree of

Elliot Richardson was one of the best dressed politicians of all time.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
