1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

What happened to 'fit' pics? They used to look a bit like this:

But now they tend to look like this:

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

More like the outtakes from a Charles Tyrwhitt model open audition.

I'm not a proponent of perfect fit, but I feel we've lost something (else) lately.

It's not just fit, it's taking in the entirely of an outfit in one shot, rather than a trousers/shoe shot and a jacket/shirt/tie shot. Even the much-derided dirty mirror shot is more useful than these catalogue entries.

+2 - and many of us don't have servants or partners who are even interested, and in any case the only working camera I have since my son destroyed the old one, is the one on my office desktop, which takes very poor pictures from the distance required for the SF robo-pose.

And now +3. Also, not to be a dick, and this isn't really directed at you, RJE, as I enjoyed some of your post in the pattern combination thread, but what's with the uptick in people coming into threads and posting things like, "this thread sucks now entertain me moar or I'll unsubscribe!"?? It's one thing if Manton or Vox has a complaint about the quality of poasts. It's another thing if some non-contributor comes along and tells us all that we need to up our production value, as if we're supposed to be diligently pounding away at our computers and cameras all day trying to entertain them.

The waywn has always been a mish-mash of photographic styles and poster intentions. While the Robot may be helpful for assessing a certain silhouette or overall fit, not everone is interested in talking about those things every time they post a photo. As we all know, some people in the waywn are looking for advice (either on combinations or fit), others simply to share or show off. And still others to satisfy some ocd urge to document their outfits in public, have a good laugh, or for god-knows what other reason.

On a purely aesthetic level, I don't find the Robot particularly stylish. Though extra points for any photo not in a dirty bathroom.

In my case, I'm only looking for feedback on my jacket-shirt-tie-square combos. The fit on my clothes is far from perfect as my weight still hasn't settled; I don't really want feedback on that, because I already know where the faults are, and I can't afford taking everything to the tailor or buying new clothes every 3-4 months. So there's no need for the extra hassle it takes to make a full body shot.

People tend to reflect what they see around them.

In this case, the evolution is the reflection of "magazine shots" (e.g., The Rake).

It was caused by the recession and economic downturn, we had to let our stylists, valets, butlers and professional photographers go. Now we have to dress ourselves, and make do with an iPhone and a dirty mirror.

Do the robot... get shit from SFers.
Do relaxed... get shit from SFers.

Solution: Do whatever you want... you'll get shit from someone anyway. :)

I don't think it is to do with magazine shots. Rather than carefully posed 'fashion' shots, what you are seeing is mainly people taking smartphone / iPad / PC shots of themselves. It's more to do with the kind of technology people are using to take pictures these days and fewer people bothering with 'proper cameras'. People with 'proper cameras' always took (and still take) a mixture of different kinds of shots from robo-pose to seated shots to men's magazine type 'action' pictures.

I'm sure this is it. It's also the time needed and the extra pair of hands required to hold and operate a "proper camera", or even a cellphone camera for the "photo-shoot". Location also comes into it as well, many people probably live in apartments without gardens or a good outside location to get those nice men's magazine type "action" pictures.

If someone has a "proper camera", it probably shows that they're interested or have a willing partner whose into good photography, as well as clothes.

Most of us probably only have our webcams, iPhones, filthy mirrors and squalid pink bedrooms to do our "fit" pictures with.

I don't even have a full-length mirror in my home, so it isn't possible to even get a full shot. The last time I posted one, I went to the Bloomingdales dressing room on my lunch break and used the mirror in there.
