I think what you've done looks great. If you wear it with black dress pants and a white shirt it will look almost formal.

A good example of Prince of Wales check:

I have actually seen my political science professor don this combination before, on the last day of our class, the final exam date. It was actually a nice look, and a great way to sport a red, maroon, or burgundy blazer, although as you've said, it can look quite dressy. Hmm, you know, a maroon blazer is a look I'd like to pull off, some day. I'll start with the essentials though, a grey suit, a more conservative sport coat, etc...

Naw, just my previous apartment. Records and a bed...what else does one need?

camel (scarves, gloves, maybe trousers)
maybe - maybe! - dark forest green (knit tie or other similar accents)

Excellent suggestions; I have done/can do most of those. The gloves, for example:

I already have the light grey trousers look in mind, but it will not happen until I'm in the correct climate again. White trousers with some beige and/or brown accents would also be tasteful. That sportcoat is easily one of the most versatile that I own

I can also see khaki green dress trousers working rather well, or my grass green tie. My traffic light-green dupioni tie might be pushing it, but we'll see

^ I did, and I immediately recommend a change of buttons to black or dark brown. Maybe horn, if you're feeling a little showy

Then investigate some of the suggested combinations and perhaps a tripod
