    Yes, you are completely right.
So indeed, sometimes wearing a cape requires a certain attention.

Once you have one and you are used to it, it learns though quite easily.

I avoid my cape when I have to go to the supermarket.
When by the car, I take it of and lay it at the back
When entering a lift I pull my cape together with my arms

That's all. A little bit attention and one get over it.
The other side : when used to it you rock!

I can only say this :

    1. I ask always feedback if I have any doubt about a combination I wear ( with or without cape) to my best friend or girl friend.
    2. I have come to the conclusion that people suffer the most about the thing they think they will suffer.

But usually fear is not a good thread to follow.

You should follow your own taste and develop your own style.
My experience is that - by doing so - you discover a lot of new things.

When people think your appearance is ridiculous, it is because of the whole.
It is never because they think your cape is ridiculous.
It is always about the combination.

It is true, a cape draws sometimes attention from people on the street.
When so, make sure that the way you have combined it, is allrigth.
Choose your colours well and pay special attention to your shoes or boots and hat.
You will discover : you will get over your fear and enjoy your enlarged fashion freedom.

It seems to me you when you think about men wearing capes you have associations with vampires.
Well not all men wearing capes are vampires. Get over it.

Most men are simply uncomfortable wearing a cape and just prefer to don their coats.

Where to buy a cape ?

You will not find capes for men in the first ordinary shopping street. You have to use internet to find out where you can get them.

For Dolce & Gabbana, Jill Sanders, Mugler etc. you have to search via internet.
Each of these names seem to have a specialised network of shops all over Europe.

For the Italian tabarro, just "google" with "tabarro" or "mantello" and you will find shops. Ebay. it ( Ebay italia) is also an option.
I can surely recommend this : the italians offer good quality full circle capes and they are not too expensive.

For the spanish capa go to "Sesena" . This is a big shop in Madrid which sells capes to an international public.
Its expensive but fine quality. You can even order embroidered ones.

And the last option is your own taylor. Have it custom made. But before you do that, have clear by yourself what model you want.
Capes are full circle and half circle. Also available ( the most ) in clockmodel. And you have shorter ones and long ones. I recommend knee - length.

Have a try and search via internet and you will find!

If you feel ridiculous when you wear a cape, do not do it.
Let it for others and keep your cape for your Halloweenparty

In general : Do not wear anything you feel uncomfortable in.
But my experience : it is not the cape in itself which make a person ridiculous or not.

If ridiculous it is because of the combination you wear, with- or without cape.
Walking with a cape is not ridiculous in itself.

When you choose a tasteful combination you will discover there is nothing ridiculous about wearing a cape.
A cape draws more attention on the street so it requires even more that your colours and accessoires are well chosen.

You can see some examples of combinations by the foto's of my profile.

Actually I have never met this.

On the contrary : I can affirm the experience another man told in this thread that a lot of women do like men wearing capes.
Believe it or believe it not : its true !

As said before the association with a rapier, vampire, Jack the Ripper or whatever :
I can only imagine this when you walk around midnigth in a long black cape in a small foggy street of London having a knife in your black gloved hand.
Probably you had fun coming back from a Halloweenparty.
    And that migth skare people.

It seems to me a lot of men are more afraid for being seen in a cape
more than women have fear being raped by a man in a cape.
I should say : Get over it.

Surely people uncomfortable wearing a cape because
    • They are not practical
    • there would be a lot of negative feedback as they are not particularly fashionable in this day and age
    • Most people associate them with super heroes or Sherlock Holmes type characters

If none of this bothers you though. Enjoy caping it up!

Thanks for your feedback and honest reply. Here my thougths:

About "Fear of ridicule" : there are better cape - options than the one shown in your picture.
If you happen to do not like capes at all anyhow, than there seems to be no problem : do not want it and don't do it.
Tastes differ, also about what is fashionable and what not. No problem, that 's part of reality.

Apart from wearing capes is my opinion is that you have to wear clothes where you feel comfortable and good in.
Why wearing capes if you do not like them ? If so : Do not do it. Keep them reserved for your Halloweenparty.

If it is because capes are not "practical" you are probably rigth.
A coat is easier in use, though there are even capes with pockets inside.
But if "practicality" is the only standard then let's forget about a lot of accesoires : the hat, the tie, the pochet etc. : not practical either.
Just use jeans and t-shirts. And feel good about it. No problem. If it only has to be practical.

But if you happen to do "like capes", and never have weared one : so stay at the safe side to begin with.

    Here is my advice :

Choose a classical one ( black or darkblue knee - length ) and combine it well.( Have a look at the pictures above)
Ask your best friend or girl friend his or her opinion for feedback
And finally have your try out and go together for a nice coffee in town on a terrace.
Enjoy your company, enjoy your cape, enjoy your day and discover perhaps something new about your own taste and style.

    Good luck!

I like it but I give you this advice : take a full circle cape of red wool. Its better to keep you warm.

If I pursue a second career as a shepherd, I could wear a big tweed- or loden cape. It would be like a warm little tent to sit in by the bonfire, watching the sheep being torn apart by wolves.

You choose for only one possible cape - application (which I can understand by the way ).
But there is even more possible with capes.
Have a look at my pictures at my profile for more possibilities!
