I typically just dress casually to shop.

I've had too many people ask me for assistance if I go into a department store wearing a suit and tie.

Although it can be fun to just ignore people who ask you for help until they get agitated that you are ignoring them and then say "How would I know? I don't work here."

I like the idea but fear that where I shop I wouldn't find such a salesman. Guess that's a difference between Europe and the US- if you don't look the part, salespeople will look down at you.

I just wear what I'm usually wearing, which is quite often a sportcoat and always nice pants and shoes. It wasn't always that way. The salesman I kept was the one that treated me like a valued customer when I wasn't even buying anything, but instead just having some pants altered. He remembered my name when I picked them up two weeks later and that was that.

My opinion is that if you're going some place new, don't wear your best outfit on your first day shopping b/c you'll quickly learn who's worth dealing with.

I think one gets the best service when one shops in the nude. Not only can the sales staff 'size you up' most accurately, but the full extent of one's needs is immediately known, as you can see below: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PPlaqueB.png The man is gesturing to say, "I'd like some clothing, please! And my wife could use some help as well!"
