What do you wear when you have to dress up a little?

I am wondering what you guys wear when you need to dress up a little more than typical streetwear? I am not talking about a suit, but just a step above jeans and a t-shirt/hoodie? I'm tired of wearing button down striped shirts that you see everywhere. The other night I was at a birthday party and literally every guy there was wearing a jeans and a button down striped shirt untucked.

tuck your shirt in for starters.

the shirt itself matters. not all buttonup striped shirts give off the same vibe. and the fit is crucial. if it's boxy and ballooning, then you'll look like every other guy.

add a sweater? or wear a crew neck sweater in lieu of shirt

so many options.

Keep the jeans, wear nicer ankle boots or lace-ups/monkstraps (I like Costume National, YSL Rive Gauche, Varvatos, Crockett & Jones myself) rather than tennis shoes or beater ankle boots.

I will also wear a slim wool or cashmere sweater with a dress shirt under, and maybe a slim and minimal wool jacket (1 button or higher-stance 2 button, slimmer lapels, I like brands such as Jil Sander, Armani Black Label, Helmut Lang, Dries Van Noten, etc).

Edit: You could also switch the jeans out for cords, moleskin pants, or wool trousers with an interesting pattern or texture.

depending on how dressy you need to be, ive found that slim cut long sleeve thermals in solid tones can look very classy, especially if paired with more dressed up elements like ankle boots (I would probably put some brown chelseas with this, but its all up to personal opinion)

Band of outsiders white oxford with cardigan or tweed blazer with some suede loafers and raw denim.

I'm not a big fan of button front shirts so when a situation calls for something nicer than a hoodie, I turn to sweaters. I think it's pretty hard to beat a pair of raw indigo jeans with a turtleneck sweater. My standard thing to wear when going on a coffee or lunch date is a polo with my light grey zip mock neck. I wear dark jeans and brown boots and I usually have my leather bag that is a close match to my boots. I think it looks pretty good together.

When I go out partying I usually go for the very fitted button down shirt, V. Dark/raw denim, Leather Casual Dress shoes (pointy scuffed look blued leather shoes I got from Japan go awesome with this look) Or if I need to dress a bit more I go something like this

Does every single one of your posts need to have the word "Japan" in it?

You could try adopting a moral formal style as your "standard casual gear". To me a t-shirt and jeans is just as casual as a stripped button-down with a sweater over it. I can wear either-or. Since I wear that look normally, it doesn't stand out and I feel totally comfortable in it.

The only time I'd really see something as "too formal" is wearing a tie somewhere it's not needed.

Not necesarily,
Well I often make refferences to my pointy shoes and other ****, basically that vacation was a defining moment in my life (small city guy who hates it here goes to a very cultured/fashion central area, cant help but love it)

Please understand...
I'm half Japanese and I grew up when anime came to America.

Dude, your shoes are not that pointy. Winklepickers are pointy, those japanese shoes are just long:

Yow, those are pointy, and quite ugly.

and Shonen please do understand my situation also. I am not one of those Everything-is-so-much-better-in-Japan/I love anime geeks (I dont even like a much anime, only like Initial D I do like some Dorama though). Just merely a clothes and car geek (as well as a coinisuer of fine women) who is still excited about his taste of heaven (I like Portland Or and Seattle if I want to go check newer styles around my area. Spokane is a Style hole, as in people always ask me why I am so dressed up when I wear a decent pair of shoes, denim and not a Tee shirt.)
BTW which time that Anime was big that you were growing up?
