if you're having second thoughts on both shoes to this extent, this tells me that you should just pass.

I don't really have any second thoughts about the second pair, other than fit/sizing.

I agree. I can't put my finger on it, but they look like cheaply made wannabe expensive looking suede captoes. They're just...uninspiring.

Have you try to get some Church's or JM WESTON on sales?
They have suede models and they look better than the two you have posted..

Got my C&J Westfields in tobacco suede for just over $300 (~$330) from Pediwear.

What's 30 bucks when you're getting such an upgrade in quality AND style.
