What do you think of Wool+Cashmere+Silk blend?

Hi gents,

So I went in the Crombie's store in Conduit street, London the other day, saw a pretty nice topcoat, but the fabric was Wool+Cashmere+Silk blend by 50%/25%/25%. Here's a picture:

Any of you had any experience with such fabric before? I know it is quite common for coats/jackets to come in a blend of any two of the above, but a high proportion blend of all three is rather rare and I couldn't seem to find any related threads on the forum.

For those of you interested in the detailed ascetics of the coat, you can find the same coat in a slightly different fabric here:

http://www.crombie.co.uk/mens-coats/the-theodore-black-great-coat.html

The 3-blend coat looks exactly the same and simply has a different composition.

Since there seem to be no related threads about this particular blend, I believe your contribution will be much valuable in informing any potential future enquirers on this fabric.

Thanks in advance for your contribution : )

Also for those of you who may be interested, I've been in touch with Crombie to confirm the details on the coat's construction/fabric weight/fabric mill etc. I will update the thread as soon as I obtained a reply.

It sounds like a good fabric mix from a classic company.

You may not even notice the silk - it will probably feel like a soft wool.

Thank you so much for your reply Sam : ) just when I gave up all hope of getting a single bit of attention!

Yes I absolutely agree that Crombie overcoats have always enjoyed some quite positive recognition on SF. Which is exactly why I slightly hesitated upon hearing about the cashmere & silk, as I suspected such, correct me if I'm wrong, delicate blend might hinder the otherwise longevity of this purchase.

Also I've heard back from Crombie's, and they confirmed that the fabric weight is 22oz, milled from Piacenza Fratelli in Italy; however the full horsehair canvass is not sewn but fused, in spite of the price tag. The sales rep reassured me of the reliability of their fusing technique but to be honest I'm not entitely convinced...

I don't know what Crombie's reputation is on SF - my comments were my own thoughts.

I don't think the blend will be delicate at all - it sounds quite strong to me - what makes you think it would be delicate?

I have used silk and cashmere mixed fabrics and they were strong.

Based on the brand history I assume that the wool will be high quality and also be strong.

However, if you require a certain construction technique and this coat doesn't have it then forget about it.

Trust your own first thoughts they will usually be correct.

Good to know your confidence on the fabric and the fact that it derives from your own experience

I've decided to go ahead with the purchase (mainly for the appealing aesthetics) and let time tell if Crombie's fusing really is as reliable as they suggest.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
