What do you think of this swatch for a shirt?

Just ordered to have it made. No front pocket, french cuffs, spread collar.

yeah it is a little loud/busy - but a few of those are OK at times

edit: thought i should explain myself. the fabric pattern seems very casual, while french cuffs and a nice spread collar dictate formality and subtlety, which is anything BUT this fabric's color OR pattern. this would be more appropriate as a casual non-tucking shirt to wear with jeans, maybe with a BD collar, but then again the color pattern, to my eyes, seem extremely gaudy.

From an online swatch it's almost impossible to really tell. How far apart are the stripes in real life?

To me it looks like it could be very cool. It will probably prove a challenge to mate with ties. It might look best with solid ties or blue ties with pindots/spots.

I assume that the box check detail will be hard to see from a foot away.

Should be alright I think, although matching it with a tie will be not very easy.

Really? Front pockets are traditionally informal features. Prior to about 1950, only sport shirts had pockets. All other men's dress shirts never had pockets. Why? Because in those times men wore jackets and vests, which had plenty of pockets to stash things. After WWII, men started wearing single-breasted suits with no vests, and they started taking their jackets off in "polite company". Hence, the need for a shirt pocket (to stash stuff) arose, and shirt manufacturers have added them ever since. Most RTW shirts marketed to the US have breast pockets. Many Italian made shirts feature breast pockets. However, English made and other European dress shirts usually do not have pockets. In fact, shirt pockets are highly disdained in England. Personally I like to respect the traditional nature of dress shirts and try to avoid pockets. If you look, you will find that many high end RTW dress shirts do not have pockets--especially on shirts with french cuffs since they are inherently more formal.

All my dress shirts I've ordered the past 12 mo's are sans front pocket.

+1, it's just going to look like a blue shirt with pink stripes.
