what do you do when you're right between suit lengths?

First, make sure you really are not a short. I'd classify a bottom of the collar to end of jacket measurement at 29 inches or less a short. Others might place the cut off at 30 inches - you get the idea.
There are some brands that sell various lengths in Regular.
Always check from bottom of collar.
Some regulars length from bottom of collar run to about 32.5, which in my book is a long.
My perfect length is between 30 to 30.5 in regular. I have many bottom of collar lengths of 31 that work, but I like to think of that as the max I'd like to go for on length.
I'd avoid buying and then altering length, buy you can do what suits you.
Isaia, rlbl, st. Andrea (st andrews) and many others sell jackets with shorter bottom of collar to end of garment measurements.
