...those really nice long coats that goes below the knee? not the raincoat waterproof materials, but like those made of wool, shearling, etc.

Overcoats. A full-length overcoat, to be precise, I guess.

(sometimes they're also called topcoats, though I think from a previous thread that topcoats are generally a bit thinner and lighter).

then what is a trench coat? (sorry i am baffled with all the different terms) what kind of overcoat do you think is suitable for a college student? i don't want one that looks too business-like, but i don't want one that looks like a longer version of what everyone else is wearing (nylon raincoat material type of jackets). i'm eyeing on this coat. what do you think?

a trench coat is a military style usually of heavy water repellant cotton twill.
style features are: double breasted, shoulder straps, waist belt, sleeve straps,
length below the knee, and often a zip in liner, plus possable other details, like
a gun flap at the chest, and a cape back. or any combo of these.

My mother had that exact coat, in cashmere, though it was by YSL.
