Another impulse buy. I've been craving a glen plaid suit, and I found this blazer in my size. Now I'm not sure how I'll wear it. Ideas?

Grey Glen Plaid is nice and has a nice tecture and colour. Its pretty versatile but formally I´d wear that with a light blue shirt/Crips White Shirt and a Dark Navy/Blackish tie.Bonad always cut a good figure in hos glen plaid

Is that really a blazer and not just an orphaned suit jacket?

I'm not sure what kind of pants you'd wear that with. Maybe something dark to contrast. I don't think khakis would work. Jeans would be fine if worn casually.

Charcoal pant is the easy choice.
Shirt in white or blue.

Other things can work, but that would be my basic choice.

I'm not the least bit sure about that - I don't yet have an eye for such things.

+2. A SC would have a much larger pattern scale.

Sorry to hijack this thread. Apologies to the OP

But what would you wear with a light brown/tan glen check plaid suit? Is light brown/tan more versatile than grey? I dont think so. I'm assuming I can only wear the brown with dark brown shoes, right?

Cheers

This is just a (second hand) orphaned coat from a suit.

It is not a plaid pattern either.

GBR: Can you clarify? It looks a lot like several other coats that I've seen described as glen plaid.

Since this is the 2nd time I've picked up a vintage coat that SF members have concluded was originally part of a suit, I figured it was time to do some more self education. In a fairly exhaustive google search for glen plaid blazers / sport coats, I'm getting the impression that sports coats usually (though definitely not always) can be distinguished from suit coats by one or more of the following:
1. a larger scale pattern - one that might be overwhelming in a full suit
2. more color - again, an element that might be too much in a suit
3. rougher fabric.
4. simpler cut (e.g. patch pockets)

I'm assuming things like elbow patches and hacking pockets would also indicate sport coat as well, but since they're not essential parts of sport coats, I left them out.

Am I getting somewhere?

The buttons are a big give away, for me, too.
