What do I take to a brunch?

OK normally if I am having breakfast/lunch/somewhere in between with people, we would go to a cafe. I have been invited today though to brunch at a friend's house. He is one of those expats with everything in the package, so he will just pack the maid off to buy way too much food, and it will probably just be me and his family (wife n two kids). What to take?

Dinner etc, I'd take wine. Too early in the day for anything like that....knowing that they will just send the maid to the market, I can't show up with like, a bunch of watermelon and pineapple and things, they'll already have it sorted.

I am tempted to just bring a shit ton of candy to toss at the kids (I'm cool-uncle-matt to them because I have a dirt bike)...so, back on topic...what the hell do I take?

Have to leave in 45 mins....

yeah, I was thinking of that too...but then, I dont know, hmm, maybe I am being stingy. I'd have to take something good just to keep up with what their cellar looks like, end up like I have paid $70 for my omelet and their company. I would have rather gone to a cafe and I would have happily picked up the tab for the whole family, and still be $40 better off than going there.

You're probably right though...

From an old (and apparently popular) Soviet movie.

"Only aristocrats and degenerates drink champagne in the morning..." (Шампанское по утрам пьют только аристократы или дегенераты) (pauses, checks out the bottle and drinks right from it)

It does sound like they're going to some effort for you, so something a bit personal would have been best. As you only had a few minutes though nice champagne is good.

In future though plan ahead !

I like the hotel champagne brunches where they have free-flow champagne.

The Hilton in Beijing has one that has a free-flow of Taittinger.

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
