Out of desperation, sole fillets with tortured shitakes, potatoes subjected to the wonderful German invention called the Pellkartoffelgabel. Wine. History of US cities in the 1900's.

Nice to see you posting again, Fab. Hope you have been well.

What did you do to those poor shiitakes?

Sorry, Alter, maybe one of those occasional outbursts that should remain elsewhere. But there it is. I was going to make a civilized sauce, French style, but then the smoky flavor emanating from the pan took over, and I just threw them onto the sole.

Went in to SF with friends to meet another friend who went to school with Tony who owns this place: [IMG] Ended up sharing the winning Margherita and a truffle pizza: [IMG] [IMG] Then after, went to a place with this massive donut before going off to see David Cross. [IMG]

Fine meal with great friends last night: Prosicutto from Iowa (La Quercia -- outstanding) and Niagara along with some cheese to start. Then cumbraes ribeyes as the entree. Some champagne and '98 Phelps cabernet to drink.

on friday had some people over for rosh hashana. made a really nice rissoto, chiecken soup, roast chicken with little potatos, blueberry and apple pies.

we started off the evening with with a collection of honies - honey and apple or honey and challah is traditional for rosh hashana. I have about 15 types of honey at home, and we decided to put out about 10 of them with little signs explaining what each one was. that was a huge hit. we spent about half an hour with people just trying the differnt honeis. I think that will become a family habbit from now on.

We're lying low for a couple of weeks, due to various reasons. So last night, we had a bottle of '03 Shingleback Shiraz, MacClaren Vale, with various cheeses (Cambazola, a rich triple creme, aged Manchego, Cotswold, mature Stilton, and a Beemster) with a nice selection of meats, from a little shop I've found that brings in whole pigs and sides of beef, and makes its own charcuterie.

It's very nice to share dinner with your wife, sip a bottle of wine, have nosh, listen to chill music, and find three hours have passed.

Saturday night - Spaghetti w/ vongele (actually NZ cockles), garlic, white wine, parsley form the garden (+ a smallpinch of red pepper flakes while the garlic was sizzling); broccoli and good semolina sopping-up bread

Also prepped a very good shrimp chowder for Sunday lunch (fishstock simmered w/ shrimp shells & corncobs; saute onion, garlic, carrot, fennel, celery in bacon grease & butter; add strained stock; add some potatoes & the corn kernels). Sunday morning reheated, adjusted seasoning and tossed in chopped up shrimp & bacon - garnished w/ basil slivers and fresh cornbread [IMG]

Sunday was no-carb chicken wings with grilled zucs.

Tonight, locally made cheddar brats with fried mushrooms and onions.

    Tomorrow, big salad.
