Depending on the shade of brown, pretty much anything, except for black.

thanks, for my latest purchase are a dark chocolate brown. navy or dark blues and browns are something i'm still not 100% on though, as a general principle isnt it good to stick to similar toned colours ? brown and dark blue seem pretty far apart, no ?

Pretty much any color. You want contrast. Go look at the WAYWRN thread for inspiration. It's nothing but pictures of what we're wearing. Folks wear brown shoes almost exclusively over there.

I've seen gray suits and brown shoes/ belts go together suprisingly well.

Right - this was put out by Esquire, although a decent guide, far from comprehensive.

I feel like a calf brown shoe goes better with charcoal if you're from Italy or maybe work on Saville Row. But in my midwest office? Hell no. However, I wear only brown with blue-base suits.

Follow-up question...if I wear brown with a gray suit, should I wear brown socks as well? That one always stumped me.

I like wearing brown shoes with grey trousers, and when I do, I usually like to coordinate my socks with the shirt i'm wearing. Doesn't have to match exactly, but I'll throw in some elements of color to match those that are in the shirt. I think it adds some contrast between the brown and grey, but still helps to hold the outfit together as a whole.

Now that you mention it.. I think I've matched the socks to the trousers, shoes or shirt/tie - I guess whichever pair I saw first - never thought about it before.

Depends on how dark that is. Brown works with most of it, but on the really dark ones you are better off with barker colors.
