What colour tie with black dress shirt?

What colour of tie looks good with a black dress shirt and doesnt make me look too formal/old? I'm thinking dark grey, white, or dark red/burgundy. This is for a highschool jazz concert, and we are wearing all black (black dress shirt, pants, and shoes).

I'm all for going with the flow and wearing what makes you happy, but the all-black thing just isn't a good look, especially with a tie.

I just recently got out of high school, and from what I remember, he probably has to. I don't own any black shirts, so I can't really speak to what would look the least bad, unfortunately. If he weren't wearing black, I would say to wear a bow tie and roll his sleeves a bit, but... ugh.

If you don't already have the shirt, buy it from H&M. Ideally, you'll never wear it again, and they're like ten bucks, so...

It sounds as if this was a director's decision and the young man has no say in the matter of the black shirt. If so, I agree with GBR that no tie is best. If a tie is required, or if the OP is simply hell bent to wear one, get a solid black or silver-gray, preferably a grenadine if funds allow. He'll get a lot of use from it later.

If you're all wearing the same thing, I'd suggest the same for your choice of neckwear. So either all wear one, or none of you do, and you all pick the same thing. I appreciate that a jazz concert isn't the same as an orchestra, but if the director has gone to the lengths of specifying a dress code, I suspect they also have a firm opinion on whether you wear a necktie, and in what colour. Just ask them.

On a more general note, silver or ivory is probably the safest choice, as others have said. Some kind of rich gemstone colour can work if you really want to go all out... and the occasion, and rest of your outfit allows for that kind of leeriness. It's extremely difficult to pull off, though.
