What color trousers with a black shirt

I have a long sleeve button down shirt that is a very dark charcoal, not quite jet black. What color trousers could I wear with this shirt that won't cut me in half?

I originally purchased the shirt to wear with jeans, but I'd like to also wear it with trousers. This will be without a tie or jacket.

Thanks

A nice low contrast option that wouldn't cut you in half would seem to be a color approaching the darkness of your charcoal shirt. Something like perhaps a navy, charcoal or black itself.

If your shirt is charcoal, wear a pair of solid/pinstripe black pants.  If your shirt is black, wear a pair of solid/pinstripe charcoal pants. Nothing else would be as elegant, in my opinion.

Although understated's subtle low-contrast suggestions are ideal, personally, I would drill down through a few pages of threads and see if you can borrow those pink chinos.

Nothing, throw the shirt away. Black shirts just look like crap anyways.

I have a black sport shirt that I wear with olive green trousers and black lace ups or loafers.  I think it's a really nice look, and my wife likes it, too (which matters to none of you at all, but matters to me a great deal).  Another option might be a pair of trousers in "stone" (that really light khaki color), again with black shoes.

I would avoid black with white.  It makes you look like a waiter, IMHO (although, with a waiter, usually the pants are black and the shirt is white).  I don't know that I'd do black with charcoal grey, as the colors are really close, but black with a lighter grey would look nice.

Regards,

Jeff

I see the ernest school of tact is alive and well...

I second the idea of black pinstripe pants if you want to go with trousers.

Wait... you can pair it with a skin tight jeans and worn open over a pearl jam tee. this should be a subbtle way to get the thread moved to streetwear

Not true, have you seen la Dolce Vita? In the end Mastroianni is wearing a very nice white suit with a black shirt. Looks stunning.

But i would wear a black shirt only in combination with a white suit or jacket.

Reminds me of Mr. Roarke. Edit: it occurs to me that Mr. Roarke's shirts were white; his ties were black. Â My apologies to Ricardo Montalban and to Fantasy Island's costume designer. I do think that the white over black look is not a good one, though. Â Maybe Guys and Dolls is the better analogy.

I can't image what color the pants would have to be.
Pink chinos. Pink chinos. Pink chinos. Pink chinos. Pink chinos. Pink chinos.
