I dont have any navy socks - should I get some? Any other colors/patterns I should look into? Pictures of patterned socks with my combination would be great

p.s. does it have to be navy? navy seems like it would make my feet blend into my slacks. i work in a conservative office - are socks a couple shades lighter acceptable?

If you are really trying to be "proper" and "conservative, then yes, match the sock to the pant and go with navy.

Many guys in your office probably where black socks with navy. The world won't end but

Personally- I prefer "fancy" socks (stripes, colors, light colors etc) but then I don't work in a conservative setting. Green argyles, or orange even, for example.

Marcoliani

A few examples. At that link, first page, 8th sock down, stripes with blue, light blue, black, lime green and yellow.

2nd page, 3 down, the burgundy, check. 5th down, red microstripe. 6th & 8th down (next one) blue argyle.
And several others there.

If you really feel you need to stick to solids/matching/conservative... you can always look for socks with a weave/paterrn or small contrasting detail. http://www.byfordus.com/5005 Page.pdf

Matching socks to pants - blending feet into legs - makes your legs look longer. Which is a plus. That's the theory. A matching sock is also inconspicuous. If you do not want to call attention to your socks, match to pants.

If the setting is conservative enough to necessitate black shoes with a navy suit, then I would suggest just sticking with navy socks. It isn't "fun", but it is proper, which sounds like what you need.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
