What color is your overcoat?

I am about to get an overcoat from one of the many clearance sales in the next few weeks, and trying to decide on the color. I am personally stuck between black and charcoal grey, as I think those look best for this kind of coat and go with the most things. Which color do you have and why?

As an aside, is there a reason to choose flap pockets over **** on this kind of coat? Most I see are made with flap, which seems odd to me, as I'll certainly want to put my hands in the pockets- and **** pockets make that a lot easier/looks better, IMO.

As you want to get a feel for what you should do, and not out of curiosity, I would have phrased the poll a little bit differently, so as to reflect what coat people would want rather than what coat people have.

This way you would get a feel for whatpeople feel is a better and more versatile color rather than what people have for whatever reason (clearance, availability etc.)

Also I think that you find more flap pockets on double breasted coats and **** on single breasted with the difference between the two being that DB I think is usually dressier and Single (raglan or similar style) more casual so on a double breasted you would not be sticking your hands in the pockets wheras in a single you would.

Personally I think that Charcoal is the most versatile and we recently had this discussion on Andy's, http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/F...?TOPIC_ID=3945 and as you can see, as with all discussions and opinions you will have 10 people weighing in here with about 14 opinions. Also, Scupe, in all fairness, so that the thread doesnt get hijacked and heads off in a different direction start another thread on the what shoes to wear with said coat. As a victim of hijacking let me tell you it can be upsetting. JJF

I think flap pockets help to break up the solid plane of an overcoat, but go with what you like.

I voted navy, because I wear it more frequently, but I have overcoats in navy, charcoal, and camel. I wear the navy the most, followed by the charcoal and rarely the camel.

I have a charcoal SB, a tabaco colored cashmere SB, a tan trench coat, a leather trench coat (for eastern europe).

If it must be one overcoat--heaven forbid--then:

black
double-breasted
peak lapels
slash pockets
Loro Piana Storm System 100% cashmere
high **** in back (with button half-way)
handmade buttonholes and finishing
mid-calf or longer length

Next year, try a camel hair tweed double-breasted one.

If cashmere isn't your thing, try Escorial, 14-micron, guanaco, silk, leather, etc. In fact, Brioni makes a cashmere/silk reversible and a leather/cashmere reversible. The NYC 57th Street store might have them on sale right now.

My favorite color is the one that's whatever I'm wearing today, and I will wear differnet favorite color tomorrow.

I have a traditional tan Burberry-style trenchcoat - it's a J.G. Hook knockoff - but is very nice.

Unfortunately, it doesn't get much use here in the desert - I haven't worn it once in the last 5 years.\\

My only overcoat is black and well into the third year. When I bought it didn't care as much about clothes as I do these days. Strangely enough it doesn't show much wear despite being a blend of 70% wool, 20% nylon, and 10% cashmere.

The next coat will be a 100% wool/cashmere in medium grey or navy blue, provided the prices drop further.
