what color corduroy?

I'm considering getting a pair of corduroys...what are the basic/versatile colors?

Sage, brown etc. Earthy colors, especially since I like to wear them in the Fall.

Serious answer: wheat, dark brown, dark green. Think about what you'll wear them with. If you'll be pairing them with, say, dark brown sportcoats, a lighter brown will be more useful than a dark.

I wear wheat/light brown cords more than any other, with dark brown as runner-up.

As others have said, darker, wintry colours tend to work best.

I have pairs in chocolate brown, a lighter mid-brown, navy blue and forest green and they are all great.

I wear my dark green ones most, but as long as it's a fall or winter color you'll get a lot of wear out of them.

Come to think of it, I could use another pair or two...

I wear my light cream cords most. They work well with my tweedy jackets and plaid shirts.

Brown and navy blue are classic colors...and best for casual evenings

But its my Corn and Rust (burnt Orange) corduroy trousers which I grab for most often during the day

as a chubby assed individual, I prefer dark brown and khaki varieties. Anything more colorful and I look like a clown college reject.

British khaki and tan are a lot easier to pair with shoes than mid- to dark browns are (for me anyway). Basically, you can wear them with anything that you'd wear khaki chinos with, which is a lot.
