Not to be crude, but that's a terribly complex subject that can't be tossed out with one line. I mean, how much time do you have to consider each thing that can be considered? Freedom? How you feel? I think if you pursue these sorts of questions the answers take a lifetime.

ultra entry: Vespa or Lambretta
entry: acura, mini cooper s, saab (used if any are too pricey for this category)
mid: bmw (135, 335, 330d), infiniti g35/37, Lotus, Porsche Cayman
high: bmw m6, Porsche 911, Audi RS6
lux: Ferrari, Aston Martin

Other notables would be 1960's Aston Martin DB4 + DB5, late 60's Camaro SS, late 60's Ford Mustangs, Barracuda, etc. Also, I've been looking at bikes recently and Ducati (esp. GT1000) and Triumph both are at the top of my list.

Not crude at all! That was the point I was making. And I do pursue these questions....daily. The philosophers life is not, by definition, easy.

Well, that depends on what you mean by 'good.' To me, it means something that returns the aesthetics to driving, without divorcing one from the feel. Style also matters.

Is an XK better than an E-type? Well... since an E's breaking's terrible, the power's mediocre, and the handling's...meh. No. But since it has much more style... yes. It's what you want.

If I could afford it, I'd go for a new XKR, provided I could tolerate the computers. The sound is.... amazing. Also, if I wind up not being able to afford a Lotus for my next car, I'll buy a 2004'ish XKR. Not because it's better than an E, but because, for me, it's better than anything else. Get something that makes you smile everytime you see it.

Best,
Huntsman
