what brands to look at for peacoats?

Lots of manufacturers seems to be pumping out solid peacoats in the 300-500 range this season. I've been tempted by non standard colors to add to my navy, but seems not worthwhile financially.

+1. If you want a fashion-forward peacoat, then the streetwear forum has a peacoat discussion about once every 2 days.

If however, you want a authentic military peacoat made by an outfit that is currently contracted to supply the US Navy, then look no further than Sterlingwear of Boston.

You can have the sides taken in very easily. I have a Sterlingwear at the tailor right now for this very alteration. Should be a very straightforward job and will cost me about $30. So, $120 for the peacoat + $30 for alteration still puts me well under what a name brand would cost - moreover the quality of the Sterlingwear is impeccable.

Sterlingwear will also make peacoats in some non-standard colors. I have one in charcoal gray and IIRC, their website includes black, navy, and burgundy options.

Love that RL but wouldn't mind spending less. How is the fit on the Sterlingwear? I used to have a USN peacoat that fit like a glove in my size. On the website, the coats appear a bit large. Should one size down?

General consensus is to go with regular jacket size for roomy fit (to accommodate sweaters, etc.), size down one for snug and size down two for crazy fashion-forward. Regardless, the peacoat will be boxy because that's the way it's cut - the only question is whether it is a wide box or a narrow box. If you want waist suppression, you will need to get it tailored. I am about a 39 chest and I went with a 38. The coat is just right around the shoulders and it has fairly high armholes, so I don't think I could have fit into a 36 even if I tried.
