Clear metal!

(Inside joke.)

Serioulsy, I have one pair of MOP stays, which don't fit all my collars. The rest of the time I wear plastic.

One of my sisters gifted me a pair of Tiffany sterling stays around a decade ago, I've been meaning to try them. I choose from a bowl containing a mish mash of plastic stays which I have accrued over the years from a dozen different shirtmakers.

I used to use plastic, just because they came with my shirts. But I got a set of 18 stays in three different sizes in brass from Club Room at Macy's. I use those everytime I wear a collared shirt.

They're great because I can bend them slightly to give my collar a little character.

My tailor gave me a set of S/Silver ones (with my initials engraved) as part of my first bespoke shirt - I have never looked back since then..

Also, chicks dig that little detail..

Brooks Brothers - silver. The $30 pack has three sizes that work in all sorts of shirts.

Plastic... Brooks Brothers Outlet 346 stays at $6.90 for a jar of 20 in various sizes, though the majority are standard size.

Has anyone noticed any functional difference between metal and plastic, as in, plastic allows for a softer-looking collar?

Just the plastic ones that come with my shirts, plus a few extra that the salesmen give me at Borrelli.

Plastic--always! Metal stays can tarnish and discolor the fabric, especially if they are accidentally left in during laundering, which almost inevitably happens with collar stays. I note that Alex Kabbaz, who should know shirts if anyone does, has recommended plastic in similar threads.
