I haven't traveled as much as others on the board and I tend to prefer nature and scenery over buildings and architecture (although I do love all of the above).

Milan isn't the most beautiful. In fact, it's pretty ugly. But I really enjoyed the nightlife and the feel of the place. Compared to some of Italy's more heralded cities, it feels unavoidably "authentic". Even as the obvious American living there, no one treated me as a tourist and spoke Italian to me. In Rome, it's hard to walk around without someone beckoning to you in English once they recognize your nationality.
