This. Kent Haruf is one of my all-time favorite authors. Beautiful words, but he actually understands (and likes) people.

Edit: Halfway through this book right now and it is EXCELLENT. For those interested in art, antiquities, and/or history I'd say this is a must-read.

Has anyone here ever attempted The Story of Civilization series by William Durant? Reading all 11 volumes seems like an impossible task but I was thinking of picking up Part IV: The Age of Faith, Constantine to Dante - A.D. 325-1300 as I am interested in that period.

I have them but haven't started reading. I may just do the audio version.

Anyone ever read any Thomas Ligotti? Recommendations? Was thinking about Songs of a Dead Dreamer or
Noctuary.

I got into Haruf thanks to one of your posts. I think I've read most of his books. The spare prose plus the blue collar rural setting hits me every time. Brilliant writer.

Only about a third of the way through Poachers and I'm not all that impressed. The stories are enjoyable but I saw some raves on Goodreads and Amazon and expected better. I will report back when I finish.

I'm also doing The Crying of Lot 49 on audiobook in my car because I am sick of music in general. Not sure I can concentrate as well when listening.

That Jane Jacobs is outstanding.

I believe that her "Systems of Survival" is the best of all.

I'm currently finishing Carroll Quigley's "The Evolution of Civilizations: An Introduction to Historical Analysis". I plan to tackle his "Weapons Systems and Political Stability: A History", which at over 1000 pages ought to keep me busy for a while ...

Liberty Defined by Ron Paul. Also have End the Fed, but I'm going to finish LD before I really dive into that.

I read the Picture of Dorian Gray, 1984, and From Russia with Love this year. Hoping to get Casino Royale for Christmas.

And I started reading The Wolf of Wall Street as well. I'm not very far into it yet though. I need to get back on it
