Read The Wide Wide Sea and let us know how you like it.
I know I will like it. Love exploration stories and I lived in Australia so I have an interest in Captain Cook.

Started The Dark Tower - I know it's supposed to be amazing and all that, but goddamn, it starts slow as hell. My reading list is long enough that I'm debating just moving on

I got a couple of books in and gave up. The character who spoke in “Negro dialect” killed it for me.

The older i get the more ive realized if something isn't grabbing you right away there's no point hoping it will in the future. Especially with books considering i already get depressed thinking how i will never read all that i want to.

It was good. Maybe just a touch too long. He got a few titles of books wrong but it was still interesting. You know it's good when you want to learn more about the story you just finished.

Ps: went with the mermaid bookplate.

I just finished Washington Black. Absolutely brilliant and no surprise that it was celebrated by quite a few honors.

Jack Vance: Rhialto the Marvellous, 1984.

"Must your disgust be so blatant? True: we are anthropophages. True: we put strangers to succulent use. Is this truly good cause for hostility? The world is as it is and each of us must hope in some fashion to be of service to his fellows, even if only in the form of a soup."

"Our talents lie elsewhere," said Rhialto.

The final book of the Tales of the Dying Earth omnibus concludes the cycle started 34 years prior. It's hard to overstate the influence Vance wrought with these books. From giving name to a whole genre of science fiction, to giving names to magic items and spells in D&D (IOUN Stones, Prismatic Spray) and even giving birth to that games magic system (thus called 'Vancian'), and of course being mentioned in Appendix N in 1979's DM's Guide (and Vecna is an anagram of Vance).

In 2009 a tribute to these books - Songs of the Dying Earth - was published, with stories from 22 authors who all were inspired by Vance, like Robert Silverberg, Jeff VanderMeer, Glen Cook, Tanith Lee, Dan Simmons and George RR Martin.

We’ve watched the Dark Winds series on Netflix, so now I’m reading the books the show is based on.
