I don't need wiki. I grew up in NYC in the 80s, back when everything was overtly about "demographics". Even the Billboard charts had "Hot Black Singles" as a chart title. Hell it's not much different today "Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs " but I digress

EDM is merely a progression of the Euro electronic music of the late 70 (think Kraftwerks), which merged with early hip hop in NYC and then spun back into Europe.
Freestyle was early 80s NYC, with the same early Hip Hop beats and patronized by the same 'demographic' but spun off in a different direction. It used to be called 'Club Music' before the 'Freestyle' was universally accepted. Then it made it's way to Miami where it was "whitened up" considerably

Then you remember how "whitened up" some of the club songs were. Back when DJs belonged to "record pools", and the "latest & hottest" 12" vinyl was actually delivered to the club by A&R from labels.





On The Left Coast, there was a fair number of "Latin Freestyle" artist. Some were really bad, but got the right push from a record label. Some were really good, but couldn't get their feet in the door of the right label.

I remember how booking agents would offer up talent to do 3 song sets for free at nightclubs. Some of the nightclubs were actually paid, so that the artists could perform. It didn't matter. Then they could say that group was "touring", book radio spots to promote the singles and the show dates, and have "free tickets" to hand out to the 5th caller or whatever. The labels sent the act on the road in broken down vans and cheap motels. The per diem was nachos from gas stations, whatever beers that the club bartender gave you. The label would also book "meet & greet" autograph signings at record stores. This generated airplay and sales. Radio station DJs and program directors were bribed for airplay rotation. The costs for everything would be accounted for against the artist recuperable amount in their contract. The label makes all of the money. Then instead of paying the artists, they recuperate all expenses against the artists pay. None of the artist were smart enough to ask for accounting. The label says that the tour and promotion expenses came to $$$XXX, and that was it, you owed the label. A lot of these artists ended up in debt to the record labels, and never saw any money after touring.
