Appreciate it. FWIW I didn’t say all Scotch is peaty/medicinal, but the many that I have tried, with the exception of Glengoyne & Auchentoshan.
If you want to find more, look at a map of distilleries and see if it aligns with your tastes. Deanston and Edradour are both pretty close to Glengoyne (and Auchentoshan) and so is Aberfeldy. These are more readily available in stores and I don't think any utilize peat smoke (save a few Edradour which should be labeled as Ballechin but I've seen it as Peated Edradour in the States)

Thanks. Will check them out when I go to Whiskey Fest this year.

reddit r/scotch has a good map of peaty vs non-peaty cross referenced with fruit/sherry vs caramel/bourbon

Tonight was a riff on a Manhattan

2 oz Bulleit bourbon that I've infused with orange rind and vanilla pods
1 oz Noilly Prat sweet
.25 oz Luxardo
.25 oz Fernet Branca
Garnish with orange rind.

Built it in a rocks class. No bitters needed thanks to the Amaro. It was really nice and refreshing.

Haha, I was talking more of a map of actual Scotland. Since Auchentoshan and Glengoyne are so close together, perhaps he would have more luck with other nearby distilleries. But thanks for the flavor map.

A riff on a gin sour:

3 oz London dry gin
1/2 oz Meyer lemon infused simple syrup
1 tbsp acid phosphate
splash of orange bitter

Dry shake with egg white, shake with ice, strain into cocktail glass.

Very nice pure Meyer lemon flavor, and the acid phosphate gives a buffered acid bite. It's distinct from just using the juice, an amped up flavor.

For what it's worth, if you're interested in getting the smoke/peat flavor without actually getting peat, try out some mezcals.

Just for ***** and giggles thinking of trying to make some gin. Mrs. Piob is not a fan of juniper so I'll make it new style with botanicals and citrus forward. I keep thinking that but then I can grab stuff like The Botanist I posted earlier and she prefers a Vesper riff anyway.

Make a batch to fill our glasses then fill up a mixing jar and bring to the patio. Couple hours of relaxing, watching the sunset, hot tub heat and decompressing from the week. Great way to spend the start of a weekend evening with the person I like spending most of my time with.

Sipping an Orphan Barrel tonight, Rhetoric 23 to be exact. Barely viable, IMO, and I know they did a 24 and 25. Nose is all oak and tannins are racing ahead of the corn.

Not very elegant but hopefully won’t be like that Maker’s Mark I had to give away; it was the only bourbon I couldn’t finish. Tasted like corn soaked in gasoline. I realize it’s where most modern bourbon aficionados get their start, but if that were me, I don’t think I could bring myself to buy another bottle.

I’m in search of the best bourbon under $20
