When I wake in the summer and the blinds are open and my eyes register a first flash of light - I am completely terrified. I bolt upright and for a moment consider what to do with the last half of a second between what I perceive to be the flash of an atomic blast and the impending shockwave that will melt me. Invariably, I use that half second to ask for forgiveness of sins of a god I do not confess to believing in the other 99% of the day.

Does anyone else have similar experiences of uncontrollable irrational fear?

I fear the deaths of family members. I have a lot of siblings, and it would be terrifying to see them go. I think about dying before them just so I don't have to deal with seeing them dead. Although, my older brother could drop dead, and I wouldn't care all that much.

How on earth have you never seen a cockroach? If you're in an apartment, they should be scheduled to appear any time now. If not, they're still out there...biding their time.

As for me - willful ignorance and lack of curiosity.
