they are 'heel taps' in the States but it might differ depending on where you are from....I am sure that in England they have another name for them

It'd be nice to have them put on my shoes because I always wear out the heels on the outer edges--I guess it's because my back is out of alignment or that I walk lopsided or something like that.

Heel taps. I have them on many of my shoes for the same reason.

I believe the ones in the photograph are made of rubber or plastic, which (as far as I know) are not available in the UK. The metal ones (regardless of manufacturer) are generally known here as "Blakey's"

When I was a nipper 'segs' was a generic term for any metal protector you put on the soles of your shoes although IIRC the brand name segs were like drawing pins/ thumb tacks. Blakeys were the swollen horseshoe shaped segs like in the picture which were also metal but I think you could get rubber ones. Heel taps were the ones inserted by a cobbler, much more permanent than anything you bought over the counter and hammered in. Not recommended for cat burglars.

+1. Thought it was a trick quest also. I have them on the back of all my shoes. A shoe repair here in NYC can do it for $4(tops.) I don't even wear new shoes w/o getting them put on.

I remember back in high school, kids put them on their shoes to make noise. Ofcourse you could always do a "Stepin Fechet" tap dance and pass a cup around for drink money. But if anyone walked in my house, on the hardwood or carpet with those scratching, carpet snaging things on, they're going out right now, feet first or head first.
