It seems to be rare and expensive leather.
Is it worth a lot of $$$?

???

There are not too many hippos in Paris, New York and Milano. So leave hippo (leather) to natives.

A shrink is always worth a lot of money!

Hippos can run anything up to 30mph. I pity the hunter who gets downtrodden by a rampaging hippo. Not really a tale of derring-do to tell the grandkids... "ya, so your grandfather, yeah, a hippo got him..."

Of, course I have all my leather goods made out the hippos from Hermes ties. They are VERY rare but totes worth the dosh and all the sewings are made with thread spun out of Keira Knightley's pubic hair.

(I would have assumed, though, that hippo hide was a bit thick and unsupple for using on anything other than a shield to protect you from Masai arrows or somesuch?)

I've seen some on a few Lucchese boots and it looks like a very durable but casual leather.

Have a two pair of Russell mocs made up in hippo hide. Very comfortable and durable; nice grain patterns on both pair. However, there was a significant upcharge for the hides (like all exotic skins)...not sure if I would spend the extra bucks in the future.

Russell website illustrates the various exotic hide options available (BTY, the hippo is much nicer in reality than the photo).

Unless you're Trader Horn or some other adventurer, I'd think twice about it for anything other than boots or mocs.
