there is no real answer. it would be too subjective to say with any conclusiveness.

for me, i would wear AE in the $300 retail range, and EG in the $1000 retail range. i interpreted range as being +/- 20%. I'm interested in taking a look at JL and G&G in the upper range.

there are a number of shoes between those two ranges that are also worth wearing.

My advice would be:

1. For the $300 range, go with Crockett & Jones (C&J) bench grade shoes. They are readily available on eBay and from the following seller (who is the most reasonable online source of C&J, and, incidentally, has creative ways of handling import duties/taxes):

http://www.plal.com/crockett.htm

For $315 USD, you can purchase many oxford (balmoral) and derby (blucher) models. (Since you indicate your location as Waterloo, I'm thinking that you might be Canadian--from Waterloo, Ontario--so that $315 converts to about $365 in Canuck bucks.) In my opinion C&J dress shoes are far superior to Allen-Edmonds shoes, and, as the owner of 4 pairs of the former and 8 of the latter, I have a good comparison base. The British shoes are more elegant and classy-looking, and at least as well-, if not better-made.

2. For the $1000 range, I'd agree with NoVaguy's recommendation of Edward Green (EG). These are available from SkyValet for under $1000 USD or, again, intermittently on eBay.

If, in fact, you are Canadian, you'll probably have to go to Montreal to find these shoes in a retail store (unless you go to the US, where you will find C&J in New York, and, I suspect, Edward Green as well). In Montreal, L'Uomo is, I believe (but Zegnamtl should correct me if I'm wrong about this), the only place you'll find EGs.

Are those C&J on PLAL in some other currency? Because the prices are definitely not $315.

Has anyone ordered from there? How did the process go?

yeah, they're in another currency. they explain it on the site.

edit: apparently, not any more. the site appears to have changed slightly. i remember the conversion being 3.8 M$ to 1 USD, but that might have changed as well.

With currency fluctuations, the Malaysian ringgit trades at about 3.5M$ to 1 USD--hence the conversion of 1099 M$ to 315 USD above. You'll see many of the C&J oxfords and at least one derby at 1099 M$. Others go for 1159 and 1199 M$, or about 332 USD and 345 USD.

See my comments above re the currency conversion. Many forumers, including me, have ordered from P Lal, and, from all reports I've seen, the transactions have been smooth. I've never seen a report of any kind of problem (although this doesn't definitively establish, of course, that problems haven't come up).
