What are some good/stylish hats (types and brands) that a man should own and wear?

My hat collection is as small as: tweed cap (Wigens) for winter, panama hat (Stetson) for summer.
I highly recommend visiting a reputable store specialised in hats and letting you guide to your hat.
Almost every hat store will have the usual suspects such as Lock & Co., Wigens, Stetson, Borsalino, etc.

A man's wardrobe is not complete without a Fedora.

I only know of a few specialized hat stores left in the US, and none of them have much of a selection. Where are the reputable stores that carry a wide selection?

Click over to the Fedora Lounge to learn all about hats. The basics that every man should own are: A wool cap, such as those sold by B! Wear. A panama, with the finest examples being sold by Optimo and Brent Black. Be prepared to pay a lot for a high quality panama. A fur (not wool) felt fedora, the best of which are offered by Optimo and Art Fawcett's VS Custom Hats. All production hats - all of them - by Stetson, Borsalino, or anyone else, are trash by comparison. The only way that you can do better on a felt hat is by going vintage, which will require a lot of learning on your part, and many failed transactions on ebay before you get it just right. Further, with custom, you can specify brim width, crown height, ribbon width, color, and style, whether or not to bind the edge, felt color, liner color, initials in the sweatband, length of the felt hairs (standard, satin finish, long hair), etc.
