What are shell-toe superstars?

The latest issue of GQ magazine mentioned it. I'm not sure what they mean by shell-toe superstars other than the fact that its a pair of Adidas Superstars. Can someone tell me?

Thats rigth, they are just adidums. But if you get a pair, do me a favor, don't ever try to break dance, listen to Run DMC, or play basket ball (I do believe the hooligans call it b-ball or some such, anyway...) and definately do not wear them without laces/ fat laces.

Actually, they were pretty much played out in the early '80s before Run-DMC started wearing them and made them hot sneakers again.
They've gone in and out of style a few times since then, and some of the color combos from a few years ago were decidely wack, but they're pretty much a standard part of most sneaker wardrobes if you keep the color choices simple.
I have some (white with black stripes), and I like them a lot.
